Public Hearings

Public Hearings From 4 August 2020 the Queensland Coal Mining Board of Inquiry will commence public hearings in respect of the Board’s Terms of Reference in Court 17 of the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

Chairperson and Board Member, Mr Terry Martin SC said witnesses will be called to assist the investigation by providing evidence and being questioned publicly.

“The first tranche of public hearings will not concern the serious accident at Grosvenor Mine on 6 May 2020 nor methane exceedances at that mine. Investigations into all of these matters continue but more needs to be done before witnesses are called at public hearings.

“These public hearings in August will concern the role of the Inspectorate, the role of the industry and site safety and health representatives, how the management structure and employment arrangements of the mining companies may impact on mine safety, as well as the methane exceedances at Grasstree, Moranbah North and Oaky North mines.”

Members of the public are encouraged to observe the hearings on live stream or attend the hearings in person. A live stream broadcast will be available on the Inquiry’s website and accessible from any internet enabled device.

“We understand the importance of this inquiry to regional Queensland mining communities and we are investigating additional viewing facilities in regional locations,” Mr Martin SC said.

“Information can be provided to the Executive Director at the Queensland Coal Mining Board of Inquiry by 17 July 2020.

“Practice Guidelines published on the Inquiry’s website outline how to give information, including information with respect to confidentiality.”

The conduct of public hearings will comply at all times with restrictions and guidelines published by the Commonwealth and Queensland State Government with respect to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, including travel and social distancing requirements.
